At SYNERGY, we don’t want to just get you out of your initial, acute pain. We want to get you as strong as possible to ensure you are much less likely to experience these painful, debilitating injuries again in the future, and our Sports Rehabilitation Therapists can help guide you in this.
It’s common for our patients to end up extending their fitness goals above and beyond what they initially came in with, because they end up feeling physically stronger and more robust. They have more confidence in how they can safely push their body to achieve more, and they know that they have the tools from us to keep themselves strong, plus access to us for hands-on treatment at any point needed.
Physiotherapy and Sports Rehabilitation Therapy are both disciplines within the medical field, yet they have a unique set of similarities between them.
Sports Rehabilitation is often compared to Physiotherapy since both modalities use a combination of hands-on work to restore the muscles in the body back to their correct tone and length, and then some form of hands-off work whereby small exercises are prescribed to get these muscles activating again in the correct way. Both types of therapy rely heavily on physical activity, utilising exercises, stretches, and manual therapy to assist each individual in reaching their goals.
In addition to the physical components, many of the techniques applied are similar – both disciplines often incorporate massage techniques and joint mobilisation into their sessions. This is particularly prevalent in the first phase of Sports Rehabilitation treatment where the sessions will often look somewhat similar to Sports Massage, but will be very specific in the muscles they are targeting in order to restore the correct mechanics of your movement patterns. Similarly, the emphasis on education plays an important role in helping individuals progress; each type of therapist (both Physiotherapists and Sports Rehabilitation Therapists) uses education as one tool to help prevent future injuries or episodes from recurring.
A key difference between these two therapies lies not in their similarities but rather in their focus; while Physiotherapy addresses a broader range of conditions and injuries, Sports Rehabilitation therapy is more tailored to the more active population who need specialised care resulting from sports or activity related issues.
We are here to get you better – not put you in pain! Some people find the early stages of treatment to be somewhat uncomfortable, especially if the injury is more severe or has been a problem for a while. But we as therapists are always doing our best to make it as comfortable for you as possible, whilst still getting the gains we are looking to make.
Our Sports Rehabilitation therapists at SYNERGY go a step further in your treatment too, by adding a more functional exercise phase to your healing journey so you’re able to get back to the activities and hobbies you enjoy most without fear of hurting or re-injuring yourself again.
At SYNERGY we have a fully equipped gym with barbells, balls, weights, bands, and more, to allow us to replicate as closely as possible the exact movements you need to be strong in, in order to minimise the chance of your injury occurring again.
After you have received any relevant hands-on treatment from us, we will fully supervise and guide you through some basic, then progressive, exercises to show you how you can now confidently get back to the training you want to do. You will also receive a home-exercise programme which is tailored entirely to you, and what you have access to at home or in the gym.
Your Sports Rehabilitation Therapist will have closely observed you through these exercises to ensure that we are happy that your body is performing the movement correctly and that the load is appropriate for where you are currently at in your healing journey.
In the later stages of your Sports Rehabilitation treatment it can be common for patients to go to-and-fro between receiving hands-on treatment and receiving updated exercises for a period of time until you are really confident that you’re back where you want to be in your exercise and training regime.
Although our MYO-REHAB team at SYNERGY follow a systematised approach to allow us to measure your results, this part of the journey is entirely dependant on what your goals are or may have changed to. There is no cookie-cutter programme to your healing as everyone’s goals are different and everyone’s body heals in its own way. Some like the continued support of a trained professional that they trust, others prefer to go out on their own knowing that they can always contact us again if and when the time comes. At SYNERGY our aim is to always work with you and your goals.
