NEW PATIENT CHIROPRACTIC CONSULT

Caffeine Borrows Energy You Haven’t Made Yet

Three o’clock arrives and the afternoon starts to sag. You put the kettle on, or you walk to the coffee shop, and twenty minutes later you feel capable again.

It’s worth knowing what that drink is actually asking of you. Daily habits shape the tension you carry at rest, and that baseline is part of what chiropractic care is working with.

Tiredness Postponed Rather Than Removed

Caffeine doesn’t make energy. It has none to give.

What it does is interfere with the signals that tell you how tired you are. The tiredness is still there, accumulating quietly in the background, but you stop receiving the message about it for a few hours.

It’s rather like putting something on a credit card. You haven’t found more money. You’ve simply moved the moment when the cost arrives, but it arrives regardless.

The Tension You Stop Noticing

That state of alertness doesn’t sit only in your head.

When your system is running slightly hot, your resting muscle tone rises along with it. Shoulders creep upward. Jaws hold a little more closed than they need to. The muscles that keep you upright settle into a low, continuous contraction.

The awkward part is how quickly this becomes unremarkable. Hold a mild state of readiness for long enough and it stops registering as effort at all. It simply becomes how your body feels by default.

Late Cups and Shallow Nights

Caffeine also stays with you far longer than the alertness suggests.

A cup at four or five in the afternoon can keep your baseline a little elevated well into the evening. Muscles that would otherwise be letting go stay partly engaged, and the settling that ought to happen as the day winds down happens less completely than it should.

Muscle Guarding and Chiropractic Care

Tension has more than one source, and this is where two of them meet.

Chiropractic care attends to the mechanical side of things: how you’re arranged, where movement has become restricted, and which areas are working harder than they need to. What no adjustment can do is quieten a system that is being asked to stay alert all day long.

When arousal stays high, tension tends to find its way back. Care may prove more useful when the day surrounding it is asking less of you, though the size of that effect differs a great deal between people.

Adjusting the Timing Before the Amount

None of this makes caffeine a problem to be solved.

For a lot of people the interesting variable isn’t how much, but when. The same two cups sit quite differently in a body at eight in the morning than at four in the afternoon.

It’s worth paying attention to the clock, and to what your shoulders are doing by early evening. That’s your own information to gather, and nobody else is better placed to gather it.
